Study in Canada

Canada combines publicly funded universities with tuition that undercuts the United States and the United Kingdom for comparable quality, which is why it now competes with Australia as the first choice for Bangladeshi applicants. Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta hold most of the research-intensive universities, while the college system across every province offers two-year diplomas with strong employment outcomes and the same post-graduation work permit rights. Winters in the prairie provinces are genuinely severe, and that is worth factoring into a destination decision as seriously as the fee table.

The Post-Graduation Work Permit gives up to three years of open work rights with no employer sponsorship required, and time worked on it counts towards permanent residency under Express Entry. Healthcare is publicly funded in most provinces for students on a study permit of more than six months.

Bachelor degrees run four years, master's degrees one to two. Colleges award one and two-year diplomas and graduate certificates that are designed around a specific occupation and often include a paid co-op placement. Education is a provincial responsibility, so requirements differ between Ontario and Quebec in particular.

College diplomas run CAD 14,000 to 20,000 a year. Undergraduate degrees run CAD 20,000 to 35,000 and master's degrees CAD 18,000 to 40,000, with business and engineering at the top of each band.

The federal cost-of-living requirement for a single applicant is now CAD 22,895 a year on top of tuition. Actual spending outside Toronto and Vancouver is closer to CAD 14,000 to 18,000, with rent the dominant variable.

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship pays CAD 50,000 a year for doctoral study, and the Ontario Graduate Scholarship pays CAD 15,000 for a year of graduate work. Entrance awards at the undergraduate level are common but rarely cover more than a third of tuition.

A study permit requires a Provincial Attestation Letter, a Letter of Acceptance from a Designated Learning Institution, a Guaranteed Investment Certificate covering first-year living costs and evidence of tuition payment. The Student Direct Stream shortened processing for applicants from Bangladesh who prepaid tuition and held a qualifying GIC; check its current status before planning around it.

Study permit holders may work up to 24 hours a week off campus during academic sessions and full time during scheduled breaks, with no separate work permit required.

Express Entry ranks candidates on age, education, language and Canadian work experience, and a Post-Graduation Work Permit is the standard way to build that experience. Provincial Nominee Programs run parallel streams that favour graduates who studied and stayed in the nominating province.
